當猶太教經典大量譯成希臘文本後，希臘文ta biblia（復數，原意為「諸書」）遂被用以專指這些經典；拉丁文衍為單數詞Biblia，後成為猶太教、基督教正式經典的專稱，漢譯作「聖經」。

《聖經》是一本相當厚的書，頁數跟字典差不多，但其實《聖經》不只是一本書，而可以說是一套有66本的叢書。

其中有長有短；有古老的作品，也有較近期的作品，內容包括：歷史、詩歌、哲學，甚至私人信件和講章。
